These and other concepts underlie the study of politics and government. They give rise not merely to questions of fact such as, “How does our electoral system work?” but also to normative questions such as, “Is our electoral system genuinely fair?”

Our two majors — law and justice and political science — help you develop the skills crucial for success in graduate or law school, or a career in politics, law, government, advocacy and more. These majors give you a solid foundation while also allowing you to specialize in areas that interest you. Plus, you have the chance to gain hands-on experience through a variety of internship opportunities.

The Department of Political Science is home to an accomplished, dedicated, and supportive faculty, and students from diverse backgrounds with varied interests.

As a student in the political science department, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Develop critical thinking, analytical and communication skills that are essential for success in graduate or law school, as well as for careers in public service, politics, policy, law, and advocacy, plus work in the education, non-profit and private sectors.

  • Gain a deeper understanding of politics by participating in simulations in multiple courses.
  • Research topics that interest you — and showcase your work — through a podcast episode, paper, poster, presentation and more.
  • Join an extensive network of successful alumni with whom you can network in a variety of careers, such as activism, advocacy, government, law, politics, public service and social justice.
