Undergraduate students seeking readmission to SUNY Plattsburgh after an absence of
five years or more may request special consideration readmission (academic amnesty).
To do so, students must submit a written request to the director of undergraduate
admissions at the time of application for readmission. Requests must be received no later than
30 days prior to the start of the term in which the student intends to enroll.
If Academic Amnesty is approved, the student’s prior academic record at SUNY Plattsburgh
will be evaluated in the same manner as coursework completed at another accredited
institution. The following conditions and provisions apply:
- The student must not have enrolled in any coursework at SUNY Plattsburgh during the
preceding five (5) years.
- Academic Amnesty is not available to individuals who have previously been awarded
a degree from SUNY Plattsburgh.
- Academic Amnesty may be granted only once and cannot be applied retroactively or multiple
times.
- Students readmitted under this policy are required to complete a minimum of twenty-four
(24) credits at SUNY Plattsburgh following readmission to be eligible for degree completion.
The student’s academic transcript will remain a complete and permanent record of all
coursework attempted. While prior grades will remain on the transcript, the GPA associated
with the student’s academic record after readmission will reflect only coursework
completed subsequent to approval of Academic Amnesty.
The request will be reviewed by the associate vice president for academic affairs
(AVPAA) in consultation with appropriate academic representatives. The director of
undergraduate admissions will notify the student of the decision in writing prior
to the start of classes to align policy with practice.
