In addition, many academic departments host their own internship web page and list opportunities for our students as well as specific application processes and requirements.

Internships are a great way to explore career paths and does not lock you in to any one career. You will develop transferrable skills that can apply across many industries.

If you are not sure what you would like to do for a career or internship, visit the Career Development Center for help exploring options and career pathways and find something that looks interesting to you.

Career Development Center Job & Internship Postings

Once you begin the process of applying for an internship, you will need to identify a faculty sponsor.

Your SUNY Plattsburgh faculty sponsor will be a subject matter expert within the field or department related to your internship. Your faculty sponsor will act as your course instructor and work with you to establish learning goals and objectives for your internship.

Talk to the School of Arts and Sciences internship coordinator, your faculty advisor or your department chair for more information.

The Career Development Center has Cardinal Career Grants to provide financial support related to under or unpaid applied learning experiences. The application process is competitive and preference is given to opportunities in public service and high-demand nonprofit sectors, as well as first-time applicants. Learn more:

During your first (1-27 credits) and second year (28-56 credits), start exploring the skills and career possibilities associated with your major. 

This is the time to research internship opportunities and reflect on your interests, goals, and skill gaps. Ask yourself:

• Why are you interested in a particular internship or organization? What do you love to do and what do you strongly dislike to do? 
• How will an internship help you meet your career goal? 
• Are there specific skills that you will need to have prior to applying to the internship program? 

During your sophomore year, meet with your faculty advisor and start planning to meet internship requirements.

• Confirm internship requirements for your program, including GPA minimums and specific coursework
• Start building your resume and application materials

Not sure where to start, visit the Career Development Center.

During your junior (57-84 credits) and senior (85+ credits) years, you will refine your application materials, identify a faculty sponsor and begin your internship.

• Meet with the Career Development Center to refine your application materials and practice interviews
• Apply to internship opportunities
• With the help of your faculty advisor, you will identify a faculty sponsor for your internship experience
  
  • With your faculty sponsor, submit your internship registration and proposal

Semester Before Your Internship

• Submit your Internship Registration and Proposal Form during the second week of the semester (Add/Drop period)

Mid-Way Through Your Internship Semester

• Stay in contact with your faculty sponsor
• Participate in check-ins and possible site visits
• Track your progress and hours

Final Week of the Semester During Your Internship

• Your site supervisor will complete a final performance evaluation
• You will submit final assignments or presentations and your site evaluation
