About the M.S.T. in Childhood Education
The M.S.T. in Childhood Education at SUNY Plattsburgh is a 42-credit online graduate program that leads to initial New York State teaching certification for grades 1 through 6. The program is designed for career changers with a bachelor’s degree in any field, as well as in-service teachers who want to earn certification while continuing to work. Full-time students can complete the degree in three semesters.
All coursework is completed asynchronously online, so you can study on your own schedule. Fieldwork and student teaching are completed in person at approved schools within New York State. Unlike many programs where you find your own placements, our Office of Clinical Practice coordinates your early fieldwork and student teaching assignments, so you have dedicated support every step of the way.
No previous coursework in education is required to apply. Depending on your undergraduate background, you may need to complete some additional undergraduate courses in content areas like English, math, science or social studies.
Is This Program Right for You?
The program is built for working adults. Coursework is online and asynchronous, meaning there are no set class times. You can complete assignments around your existing work and family schedule. Fieldwork is in-person and is completed in one semester.
Career changers — If you have a bachelor’s degree in a field outside of education and want to become a certified elementary school teacher, this program gives you the coursework, fieldwork and certification you need. You don’t need any prior teaching experience or education coursework to get started.
In-service teachers seeking certification — If you’re already working in a school setting but don’t hold a New York State teaching certificate, the M.S.T. provides the academic credentials and clinical experience required for initial certification in grades 1 through 6.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately 103,800 openings for kindergarten and elementary school teachers are projected each year through 2034.
With a New York State initial teaching certificate, graduates of this program can teach in:
- Public schools throughout New York State
- Private schools across the United States
- Schools in states that participate in the NASDTEC Interstate Agreement — New York has reciprocity agreements with 46 states
After three years of successful teaching, M.S.T. graduates become eligible for New York State professional certification.
Throughout the M.S.T. Childhood program, I have worked full-time while raising two young children, and I have still had the flexibility in the program to complete my assignments when it fits my schedule. The professors are very supportive and understand that many of their students have several important commitments outside of their school work.
